Our trip to go see some beautiful wildlife creatures was almost tampered with; the devil had some plans, but ours were stronger!

My teammates and I had been planning this outing for weeks; we picked the Lekki Conservation Centre out of three suggested options. It’s safe to say we were very excited.

The trip was so fun; a lot of different things happened. At the end of the day, it felt like a whole week had passed. Stick around long enough, and you might get to hear about how the monkeys almost stole our food and fruit. We went band for band with them monkeys. 😅

Let me start with a little intro to the venue.

The Lekki Conservation Center comprises a 78-hectare urban nature reserve and was established in 1990 by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation in partnership with Chevron. Its goal is to preserve the vast mangrove forests and their wildlife inhabitants. This is to protect the area from urban development.

LCC consists of a lot of tourist attractions, such as

The Famous Canopy Walkway: The canopy stretches to approximately 401 meters. It is the longest suspended bridge in the whole of Africa and comes second in the world to the Senda di Dragun, located in Switzerland.

A Long Nature Trail: From this wooden trail, people can very easily see and interact with the variety of wildlife creatures, which include Mona monkeys, peacocks, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and over 600 plant and animal species.

A Family Park & Facilities: The family park consists of a playground with a variety of children’s swings and slides. It also has several sit-out areas, giant outdoor games, volleyball courts, and koi fish ponds. It’s available for relaxation for individuals of all ages, so it is family-friendly.

The trip was planned among all 14 of us nurse interns. It was supposed to be a fun way to end our one year of internship at the hospital. Like I said, we had been planning it for weeks, and we had notified all important authority figures back at work.

We communicated the date to them and asked that we be given a day off, to which they agreed. And so all was seemingly fine and going according to plan until the morning of the day rolled around. We, of course, were all on our way to the center when we started getting calls from our heads, asking why we weren’t at work.

Imagine the surprise on our faces. We immediately reminded them of all the previous calls and plans we had had. Our head nurse and deputy both said we should show up at work “in the next ten minutes or else we would be sanctioned.” Mind you, the next day was going to be our last day at work.

After some very disgruntled reactions and a conversation among ourselves, we all decided it would be smart to go forward with it. I mean, the food items we planned to share were being transported already. Multiple people were on their way, and none of us left our homes with work clothes.

So we rebelled and went forward with our plan. Honestly, it only made the trip more exciting. 😅😅.

When we finally arrived at the venue, it was so good to see one another. The compound was serene and tranquil. As I passed through the gate, I was greeted with a peacock whose feathers had lost most of their beauty. I proceeded to the waiting area to wait for the rest of us.

That’s when I noticed the monkeys. These creatures were hopping from one ledge to the other with reckless abandon. And at the slightest whiff of food and snacks, they would appear from thin air.

We were told by the tour guides later on that the monkeys became aggressive around food and we should be careful.

When the rest of the gang pulled up, we all took pictures and then went to pay for the experience. We were given paper wristbands and directed to the conference room, where they educated us on what to expect while on the tour.

Some minutes later we started and walked through the nature trail. While on there, we came across an alligator down in the swamp, and then we saw even more monkeys. This time, there were monkeys of all ages, from the little babies to the old graying ones.

After a long trek, we finally made it to the canopies and the suspended bridges. We had to be divided into groups of six each in order to cross the bridge. When I set foot on the first bridge, it felt like I was about to fall down into the nothingness way below. It was terrifying. My breath ceased at some point, and then came 😂.

I remember asking myself why I did it in the first place. But we eventually got to the second canopy. We had seven bridges to cross, each one being higher than the last. But we crossed it. As time went on, I felt more confident on the bridge. We even made some TikTok videos while on the canopy.

It was exhilarating. We finally made it down the seventh bridge and into the family park. We were all settled to have some well-deserved food. We were gathered around a table, gisting with one another. I didn’t realize there was so much to talk about after sharing the one-year internship experience.

We cracked jokes, laughed till our ribs hurt, prayed, and talked about our future moving forward. It was honestly so refreshing for my soul. The problem showed when we started serving the food. Out of nowhere, the monkeys started showing up.

Those monkeys have noses sharper than dogs. We literally had to close our plates after each bite and hold them dearly to our chests.

We kept swatting them away like flies, but they were relentless. One of them actually succeeded in swiping my friend’s plate. 😅 Thankfully, she was almost done with her food.

We wrapped up the evening with more photos and videos and finally left. We went back through the nature trail, where a monkey chased one of us carrying a nylon bag. Apparently they have come to associate nylon bags with food.

The day came to an end, we hugged one another, and we found our ways home.

My respiratory rate had to have been 30 cycles per minute; I could barely catch my breath.

It was in that moment I knew I effed up.

After what felt like an eternity of panting and trying not to faint, I was finally able to get my bearings, and my vision cleared up just enough for me to make out my partner's silhouette jogging towards me.

He looked worried. When he caught up with me, he touched my shoulder and asked if I was okay. I wasn't, and I don't know what in God's name made me think I was fit enough to sign up for a 5k-mile run!

He led me to the side of the road and motioned for me to sit and rest. He then sat beside me. I told him he could go on and that I would catch up with the rest of the gang when I could, but he refused. I low-key didn't want him to leave me.

After a while of resting and catching my breath, we finally stood up and continued the run.

I never considered myself to be athletic, and more importantly, I never considered myself to be so audacious.

When Ed sent me the flyer for the 5k mile run, I had never even done something like that. In fact, I hated the mere idea of walking for too long, let alone running.

It was wayyy outside my comfort zone, but you know what my ass did? I agreed immediately.

Matter of fact, I registered for the event before he could even register himself. Mind you, he was a gym rat and had been for five whole years.

The day of the run rolled around, and we got to the venue where it would kick off. There was a big crowd; I'm talking 200 to 300 people.

We walked up to the table, got our number tags, and waited for it to start. We took some pictures and scanned the vicinity, you know, checked out the competition.

There were a variety of people there. Those that looked athletic as hell, men with buff arms and defined abs, doing all kinds of stretches. Ladies in cute gym wear, athletic too, stretching and mentally prepping for it.

Then there were those who it was obvious came for the fun of it. They were all smiles and just happy to be there, chatting up a storm with their friends.

I remember this one girl who was bragging, she said, "The run isn't even that hard, I'll be done with it in 15 minutes." We'll get back to her case shortly. 😅.

The race eventually started. You already know, at first I was doing great; we were running and having fun with it. Ten minutes in, my body systemically couldn't handle the stress. We would run and then stop and run and stop. Most of the stops were because of me, not gonna lie 😊😊.

Anyways, I know I couldn't have done it without my partner; halfway through, I was ready to join the emergency bus carrying those who couldn't make it.

But he kept me going. And if I wasn't there, I'm pretty sure the man would have gotten first place easily 😅. He'd disagree, though; man likes to act modest. 🌚

We passed a lot of places too. I got to see the great Yaba Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, aka Yabaleft. Okay, that's the only place worthy of mentioning 😉.

Towards the end, guess who we saw inside the emergency bus panting like a walrus? You got it! The girl who was busy bragging at the very start.

45 minutes later and after countless persuasions from the losers to join them in the bus, we got to the finish line. Heck yeah!!!!

The feeling was amazing. We got our medals and took pictures 😎. It was an amazing experience, to be honest. And I am happy I got to partake in it. I couldn't have done it with a better person. Ed was the perfect running mate. Thanks, man.

A great lesson I took away from this is, always see it to the end. Your goals, your plans, your ideas—always execute them and see them to the very end. You'll be happy you did.

Ever gotten up from a nap and suddenly had this sad cloud hovering over you that wouldn't leave no matter what? Like a longing to be with a loved one and just bask in their presence?

I've felt that way after two consecutive naps, and I can't tell why. Now I'm terrified of naps because I certainly do not look forward to the feeling afterwards.

I'm sure you're wondering why I'm talking about sad clouds and feeling alone.

Well, in those moments of temporary sadness, I was inspired to listen to Billie Eilish. If you know anything about her, you know that her voice is quite soothing to the ears, especially after a long day.

And sure enough, after two or three songs, the feeling didn’t go away, but I became comfortable with it. I was able to sit with the feeling and observe my reaction to it. It was a moment of great introspection that exposed me to parts of myself I didn’t know were there.

So while I was trying to decide which song would be best for this week’s presentation, it was kind of a no brainer to go for one of her masterpieces, Lovely.

I hope this song grants you some healing and peace as you listen.

In honor of today’s edition of Hive Learner’s Creative Sunday, I will be taking us through how to prepare the special delicacy that is Yam and Egg Sauce. This a staple in most Nigerian homes and is very easy to make. It also doesn’t require a lot of ingredients or expertise to make, which makes it all the more appealing.

The video covers the entirety of how to prepare it so I will just list out the ingredients needed and the steps to make it.

Ingredients

Yam

Eggs

Fresh Tomatoes

An onion

Fresh Chili Pepper

Seasoning Cubes

Salt

Dry pepper flakes

Groundnut Oil

Procedures

Prep your ingredients: Peel and cut the yam into small pieces, Wash and dice your tomatoes, onions and pepper, Break your eggs and season with a pinch of salt.

Place the pieces of yam into a pot and boil for 5 minutes, then stick a fork or knife into a piece. If it’s soft or divides, then you can bring down the yam and sieve off the water.

Pour some groundnut oil into a pan, let it get hot then add your onions and pepper. Stir for 2 minutes.

Then add in your tomatoes and stir a little bit then leave to cook down for at least 6 minutes, till the liquid portion has significantly reduced.

Then sprinkle in your seasoning cubes and a pinch of salt.

Stir till it fully mixes together.

Then add in your whisked eggs and stir till the egg fully cooks.

Taste it!

The mere thought of bicycles gives me flashbacks of so many moments in my childhood.

I grew up in a block of flats apartment in Lagos, in that one compound there were 7 different blocks. That totaled to about 56 apartments in the compound, and most tenants were families just like us so it’s safe to say there were a lot of children around.

Growing up I and my siblings each individually owned our own bicycles – it was kind of a huge deal back then. I think we were the only ones that had bicycles. Our parents only allowed us to ride the bicycles after we got back from school, did our home works and attended “Block Rosary”.

Thankfully there was more than enough room in the compound to safely ride the bikes. So what we would do was, after saying our rosary prayers I would ask one of my mates to help me bring down the bicycle – we lived at the topmost floor.

After that we would all take numbers then ride round the block one by one. Of course the person that helped me bring it down would have extra rounds with it. I remember whenever I rode; I always managed to hit parked cars. I have multiple scars on my elbows to testify to it.

Sometimes we would even do races around the block. Remembering the pure joy and fulfillment that used to envelope me in those moments is just amazing. I wish I could back to the time when that was my only worry.

My own bicycle was royal blue in color, with very strong tires. Every couple of weeks, my siblings and I would roll the bikes down to the vulcanizer man that was set up across the street, to put some air into the tires. That was about it for maintenance.

My Cousin’s Electric Bike

Months ago I travelled across cities to pay my aunt and cousins a visit. It was in between the school session so I’d say it was a well deserved personal short break. I stayed for a couple of days and in that time; I found out that my cousin had gotten himself an electric bike. Cool right?

For those that don’t know – I didn’t – an electric bike, or e-bike, is a bicycle equipped with an electric bike motor to assist you when you’re pedaling. The motor will get its power from a rechargeable battery mounted on the bike.
To classify as an e-bike, the motor has to help you rather than propel you on its own. As a result, you need to pedal to get that assistance. How much power the motor delivers is regulated based on how hard you are pedaling and the level of support you have selected.Source

Seven years ago was the last time I ever rode a normal bike, talk more of an electric one. I mean it was my first time seeing it in the first place. But for old times sake, my cousins and I decided to take turns with it.

They took a couple of videos of me trying it out and it is quite embarrassing 😅😅. I honestly didn’t plan to share it in the first place but why not. You only live once right 😅. Enjoy the short clip of me figuring out an electric bicycle.

Welcome to my version of Creative Sunday. This week I wanted to present a song as my participation. I had a tough time trying to pick a song to present because we aren’t technically given a genre. So I brooded a bit and then finally decided to let my Catholic side shine through😁.

I perused our hymn book and settled for the magnificent and uplifting song Behold Among Men. Choosing this song and performing it reminded me of my secondary school days when we would rehearse the songs to be sang the coming Sunday. This particular one was always chosen because it gives reverence and praise to God.

When singing it, our moods usually improved, and it gave us a profound sense of hope for the future and whatever it might come with. It’s been seven years now and I still feel the exact same way – except it comes with a little nostalgia now.

I sincerely hope that as you listen to it, you may find some peace and healing in The Lord.

These are the Lyrics to the song

People called by God through the words of the prophet
People called together in the house of the Lord
People who attend to their God
The church of Christ Our Lord…

Chorus

Behold among men the dwelling place of God
They shall be His people, and He shall be their Lord and God

Temple built by saints by the martyrs and apostles
Holy temple built upon Christ the corner stone
Holy dwelling place of the Lord
The church of Christ Our Lord…

Yam Porridge is one dish that I like to call a low key fire dish. Why? It does not require a lot of ingredients, neither is it difficult to master - even as someone that has never cooked in their life. And ultimately, it tastes like heaven.

Cooking this particular batch, brought up feelings of nostalgia, it took me back to my childhood days when I would get back from an afternoon of playing with my friends downstairs. And I would step into my house only to get a whiff of divine Yam Porridge.

So for this edition of Creative Sunday I thought to share with us my Yam porridge recipe. This post will be direct and straight to the point so whip out your pen and paper, get ready to jot fings down!

Ingredients

Yam… obviously 😅😅

Palm Oil

A sachet of tomato paste

A bulb of Onion

Dry fish

Grinded Cameroon pepper

Salt and seasoning

Pumpkin leaves (any veggie of your choice)

Procedure

Prep Your Ingredients

Peel off the bark of your yam, wash and chop it into sizable bits, wash and dice the vegetables, wash and dice your onion, wash and debone your dry fish.

Get to Cooking

Boil your yam with water and half a table spoon of salt. After 15 to 20 minutes pierce a piece of yam with a fork, if it divides easily and breaks off, then you know it’s time to add your other ingredients.

Firstly, place your dry fish into the pot.

Then add like 4 table spoons of palm oil and allow to cook for 1 minute.

Sprinkle in your chopped onion and add your tomato paste, leave to simmer for 2 minutes.

Add your seasonings and salt to taste.

And finally, place in your chopped vegetable.

Then stir thoroughly and bring down the fire.

And just like that, your Yam Porridge is ready to be plated and ate.

All pictures used are my property

The new Ecency Discord Topic for the week is Pets and I will be talking mostly about the animals I’ve had in my life up until this point. They’re not many but I can promise you they are cute!

It’s sad that I haven’t had the opportunity to own a pet for more than 3 months. My mother doesn’t like them, even though my dad did. She likes to act all tough but we all know that she’s just scared of them, and no matter how much we’ve tried to persuade her, she hasn’t budged yet.

Some years ago though my dad bought a parrot and kept it in the house as a pet. Now nobody paid the bird any mind, and we all just ignored it while it sat in its cage outside. We would only feed it and give it water, which wasn’t as often as it should be.

Till one day I went outside and decided to give it water and a remarkable thing happened, immediately it saw the water in my hand, it ran close the little door. And as I opened the door, it rushed to the bowl and quickly dipped its head in it and drank as much as possible.

That was when I realized we hadn’t been taking proper care of the bird. From that day forward I took it upon myself to ensure that the bird was well fed and never thirsty, at all times.

From then, I grew close to it and decided to integrate into our house. So what did I do? I brought inside the house. The first time I did this, it was super alert and terrified. Any tiny movement caused it to screech. I brought it in for ten minutes every day, and subsequently the duration grew longer.

Eventually, it got used to being indoors, and then came time to bring it out of its cage. It had gotten way too comfortable being inside. I figured it wasn’t going to come out if I was there so I left it door open and placed some food a little far away from the door so it would have no option but to come out.

Then I left it alone in the house to go run an errand. By the time I got back, my plan had worked, it was outside the cage. It made me so happy. That was a milestone that made me proud of her. We practiced it more and more and eventually, little birdie got comfortable enough to be outside of her cage.

We developed this strong bond, and she could recognize and differentiate me from someone else. That felt amazing, like all my work had paid off in a way. In no time, I started carrying her around on my shoulder, like pirates do 😄.

Her favorite food was garden eggs.

She died a month after. May she rest in peace.

The second animal I got to know was a cat. The cat belonged to my cousin actually and I was blessed to form a bond with it, even though it was only for short while.

The cat was the cutest creature I had ever seen. It loved to sneak up on you and scare you. I found that hilarious, because we humans also do it. We mostly fed the cat whatever we were having for breakfast lunch and dinner.

We didn’t get to name the precious creature so we just called it cat.

These are the only animals that I have gotten to live with for a while, and it is for this reason that the moment I start living alone, I am getting myself a cat and a parrot. Although I don’t know if both these animals are compatible.

If you have any idea, please leave in the comment down below.
