One of the reasons I like making videos like this is it gives me a chance to document the better half of my playing.

Whenever I am toying around with new ideas I record it (at least after getting into the grove). If it isn't feeling that great I scrap it. If it is I turn it into something that makes it more memorable to me and in the process of editing I find parts I like.

If I had an audience I might do it all live but I am waiting til there is a real interest and I'd still like to improve a little bit first.

I just heard the cleaned up and mastered version of a song from an upcoming live album entitled "Resonance Experiments 1-2".

The recordings come from a live series I started recently and without even realizing it we got so many good recordings from just two shows that I started thinking about releasing them as a live album.

Since they were still a tiny bit fuzzy I hired a friend to help clean them up and make them more listenable.

The live album will clock in over 40 minutes with only 6 tracks. Each track will be a journey in itself.

And because I can't share those recordings just yet, I can only share what I currently have ready to share.

Right now I'm in the process of turning this show and another one into a live album so I have more of my work readily available to anyone who is curious.

First I wrote two new songs, then adapted two old songs (including this one) to wlectric guitar.

Then I made a bunch of videos like this, Maybe 10-12. I uploaded the entirety of my concert last month as well.

Recently I have been working on the lyrics for two songs and I just booked a show for mid february that is a but bigger than what I am used to. There will be plenty of people I don't know there, and I am going all out with the experimentation.

this will be my first show on guitarlele, which is a mini guitar, plus effects. I'll sing nee song too.

Every new year for the past 4 years I’ve set a tone, a theme, a certain idea to pursue, rather than some specific goal. I’ve found this fits my life way more than something more concrete that I am not enthusiastic about enough to do without setting it as a Resolution.

There is no pressure, just an overall orientation to start the year and to keep in mind throughout the year.

One year was "a balance between firm and flexible". Another year was "embracing anger without burning anyone". And last year was “Removing self imposed shackles and Remembering the magic of life”.

I think I did pretty well with this theme, I liberated myself from many things, namely I stopped feeling shame about various failures and stopped being afraid of integrating my different worlds into one. I wear play clothes to work now and I am not afraid to show my students my true self.

I even got some wild colorful clothing that at first made me nervous to wear and now makes me happy.

I told you my mid life crisis would be legendary and neverending.

I have a much more positive attitude than I did a year ago and playfulness definitely comes easier to me.

For 2026, the theme is “Stepping Out Into the Spotlight and Building Face to Face Community”.

I’ve alway run from attenion but this year I want to invite it in a way that feels comfortable and natural. Not seeking fame and noteriety but I am going to step out of my comfort zone where more people can see me, the real me, and pursue collaboration with the people I want to collaborate with, regardless of how big or small they are.

The rule of thumb is, if it’s exciting, don’t worry about the spotlight either way.

The show was 60-70% improvised. I played 4 old songs, 1 new song and more jams than I can count in between. I got lost in the effect settings a few times but I think it felt more amusing than awkward.

The next few months I hope to get more familiar with all these new tools, loop and multi effects and delay and reverb, so that next time I feel much more able to conduct them as if they were an orchestra.

The rest of the summer I shall be busy with music, getting back to playing shows and recording, but I hope to record Confessions of the Damaged 1.2 and 1.3 audiobook in the Fall! Maybe in the winter I will finally write the long overdue Confessions 1.4!

Actually this is something I’ve been thinking about for years, but because I didn’t have a comfortable space to play, nor the money for the equipment, I kept putting it off.

In the end I slowly gathered the parts needed, an amp, a cheap new guitar, reverb, delay, and drive pedals and music took over my living room.

My room’s always a mess now, but at least I have music.

Well I could easily just stick to the songs and style that I’m used to, I’m taking this as a chance to level up, and so I’m filling in all the gaps with regards to my weak points.

I’ve never practiced with a metronome before so that’s new, and it’s helpful since delay in the loop can confuse things a little bit. I never really did drills to work on my finger speed, and so that’s new to.

I do know basic scales, But I usually stick to the simpler shapes and can’t always play what’s in my mind easily, so I’ve been practicing those too.

The goal here was to play steady simple bass part and be able to jam between that. i’ll be working on this roof for a while until I can play more complicated licks in between the base notes.

I learned a few things this time around. I can set a background, Which is good because my room is a mess. I can download the video afterwards from YouTube so it’s easy to put it on 3Speak.

And if I want to edit it or take it down I can do that and then put up whatever version of it I want to keep on 3Speak later.

I started writing this song while living in Tokyo in 2011, just before heading out to drift around, backpacking, busking, and getting pulled into random adventures.

The lyrics were written on a 40 hour train ride, right before I quit my job and decided to live in the flow.

The song slowly took form over the course of the next few years, living between the mountains and the ocean, jamming with friends nearly every day.

The song was recorded in 2019 when I moved back to Japan. I had no idea how to record music so I taught myself and then a lot happened to prevent a re-recording until finally I decided to share the song as it is.

The video was shot in the countryside on the outskirts of Tokyo much more recently. I have only been learning to edit videos for the past few months but I tried to make the best thing I could with limited resources.

I guess this is my first “official music video”
