They are quite beautiful and I am enjoying observing them build their nests.
In the above photo you can see most clearly, the paper that they produce by chewing up plant fibers and mixing it with their saliva.
There were two nests under construction in my bedroom: each being built by one solitary wasp. Then one day, another came to the nest of one of these fine ladies and I had the spectacular luck to be watching and filming when she arrived. You can view the spectacle of their greeting and deciding to continue building together in the videos. There are 6 more lovely little videos, with extremely close up views that I've declined to insert into this article. Get in touch with me if you would like and I will find a way to share the rest to you.

This first Queen to arrive and start building... (The Queen is usually the foundress of the nest) was amiable from the beginning. Indeed all three wasps who have been living in my room have been sweet. After explaining that I am no threat, I asked permission to make photographs and videos and requested a non-stinging sort of communication, if my proximity were to become bothersome. She stared at me while I spoke and then turned profile and began leisurely bathing her face and her pretty antennae. It seemed to me that this meant she felt at ease.

And you can see from the photographs and videos made with a redmi pro note 13, that they all were entirely unbothered by me getting right up close.

This eusocial species of paper wasps live in typically small colonies of 20-100...but potentially up to 1,000. At first I had hopes that they were solitary wasps. I would have let them stay, gladly. But this won't be a sustainable cohabitation for any of us. Nor safe for my new kitty-friend. He seems to have been persuaded to leave them alone for now....but this won't do.

Colonies consist of a Queen; the other **sterile ** females who come along and help to build and maintain the nest and forage for small insects to feed to the young, while they mostly consume nectar and plant sap; and males who produced later, in the summer, are basically just for reproduction.
Watch as the Queen establishes her dominance with "antennae drumming."

They also communicate via pheromones and apparently some dancing-like body language. The "wing buzzing" behavior is seen in defense of the nest and then the two in the video came to an accord and have been building the nest together ever since.
The males of the subspecies Polistes versicolor versicolor, are seen to have more yellow on their faces as well as longer antennae than females.

While the one Queen building alone, was away from her nest the day before yesterday, I took it down and sprayed the area with alcohol infused with lemongrass. She returned and returned again yesterday, searching for her nest and trying to start a new nest in other spots. Every place that she began, I sprayed with the mixture, when she went back out for building materials.
I meant to remove the other nest with the two who are building together, last night while they were sleeping. But I haven't evicted them yet.
They are pollinators and also a helpful control to "garden pest" species, whom they prey on. They control the temperature of the nest by dampening the paper in the heat of summer.

They aren't known to be very aggressive, but I know they can't stay. Once they make babies, they will be more defensive. Occasionally a subordinate female will attempt to overthrow the Queen or to lay eggs herself. As it is early in the Spring still, the female who arrived second to the nest same nest here is likely also a Queen rather than a sterile female. This seems apparent by their negotiations captured on video. I won't wait much longer to remove the second nest, as I don't want them to waste their time and energy on continued building.
I'm grateful for the blessing of being able to observe and interact with them. Maybe if i were living in a larger space, I could let them stay and they would be my guard-wasps. We'd be good housemates, but if anybody came around with bad intentions...well...

Polistes versicolor versicolor (vídeo a continuación)

WHY?
camo, I guessed.
These ones who I've been coming across recently
prefer bits of lichen.
In the thumbnail image to this video is a different one from that in the video
The first of three I've seen here in Paraguay.
The lichen gave me better search terms than
"bugs who pile dustballs on their heads"
And funny, as I am a bit obsessed with what I know as "periwinkles,"
are also lacewing larvae who live in the water...and I search for them
always, in every stream and riverbank.
Them, I haven't come across in Paraguay YET.
I will do my best to get better fotos and videos of these guys when I can.
They move surprisingly fast for such tiny little boogars
with such big loads on their backs

I didn't want to get out of bed.
Mind, me staying in bed late is until 7 or maybe even 8 am; that's super late.
This brain turns on by 4. I often wait for the roos to roo as my
permission to get up and go, when I'm happy and it's not cold.
The madrugada is my favorite...so it's all good...getting to watch the sunrise.
Peace and quiet incomparable. First birds singing. Nightbugs going to bed.
Lovey has always been very tranquil and sweet in the early morning and
let me put him back on his rope or his dog-run with ease, once I started
implementing nights of freedom. I wanted him free at night for his protection
most of all. If somebody is going to rob the house, round these parts,
even the police will tell you it is smarter to have your dog sleep inside...
because they will feed your dog poison and there goes the protection of a
guard dog and if you give a crap, your best friend and family member.
Thus, obviously, being tied up is even worse. Lovey will not sleep inside.
He pees on my refrigerator and front door, when he's allowed in
for a moment and jumped out the window when I closed the door.
I am not worried about him accepting food that strangers would toss tho.
He would stalk them sneak up behind them and rip their throat out first.
Lovey's no fool and he is well fed to boot.
Anyhow, the fears have been numerous.
I was told he couldn't be off because he would:
kill chickens, chase motorcycles and cars, kill Lobinho (which he did seem to
want to do), maybe kill children and other people.
Well, today I just felt like it would be okay.
So I stayed in bed. By the time I got up, he was running and playing
and hearing me open my windows, Lobinho came over and the two were
playing and running and joyous with Lila also and even
the little dude from next door came to play.
I have so much renewed hope and joy today.
Please understand, I was afraid that I might need to put this dude
to sleep. I can NOT correct him in a firm voice even. He is positive
reinforcement ONLY. Because if he gets afraid or anxious,
he's dangerous. I stepped on his foot the other night
UNINTENTIONALLY and he bit my finger reactively.
Bueno, so far so good. I just have to go home and to bed and
hopefully he is there outside on his couch already now, sleeping.
And next he has to learn to love cats for family and NOT chasing and
NOT food.

Walking home through the little woods.
Just now.
With my powerful new flashlight.
It makes the scenery extra beautiful.
And I saw some fungi which look
stunning in the dark and flashlight lit.
I stop to make fotos and i am rewarded.

Caminando a casa por el bosquecillo.
Justo ahora.
Me paro a hacer fotos y me veo recompensado.

But there were all of these little miracles that saved me.
Besides the Meliponina: each one a little miracle...
There were all the silly funny things that my lady friends said that made me
Snort-laugh @Meveronicas
The insane cuteness of the love between my puppy Lila and the puppy
over at @disregardfiat. They will play all day long.
Another neighbor finishing up my 125 meter pipe ditch with his tractor
and son...which I was going otherwise to dig manually, by myself.
How could I be miserable today? It would be absurd.
Then I thought of the Meliponina and to go check on them and see
if I could photograph them well.
And I discovered that they are expanding.
From one little hive of maybe a hundred or so...
They've made new queens, multiple it seems
Because I think there are a good thousand today
And they are staying around even...
They're building a mud CASTLE
on the very same guayivi tree that they began on.
Seeing the huge cloud of them gave me so much pleasure.
The fotos didn't come out well, because they move so quickly
But I made a few videos that have some nicely focused moments.
And on top of that
As I began researching them for to write
for you all
A local facebook page about meliponiniculture appeared
When I opened up the facebook to join, I noticed a friend request from
a local man who I know little but enough about to accept
Turns out that he is in the facebook group...a meliponinicultivator!
Now I just need to get it together to make some boxes
to offer them for when they decide to expand the colonies again.

I believe that these particular neighbor-friends of mine are tetragonisca aungustula.
In Guarani known as Jate'i or Yate'i and in Spanish, by the common name Angelitas.
They are known to produce a significant amount of honey which is valued as more powerfully medicinal than the more common honey of melissa bees.
Their colonies can be as large as 2,000 - 5,000 inhabitants.
I made a couple more videos of these beautiful beings and I will continue to document the progress of their building tomorrow. There should be a great bit of progress as I did not film them today.
When I am able to make some boxes and invite them into a relationship of cultivation, I'll keep you all in the loop as well.
Apparently the traditional method of harvesting their honey has been to destroy their nests.
Much education and dissemination of alternative practices is still needed as several of the species of native, stingless bees are scarce and/or threatened with extinction.
They of course, are extremely important to the ecosystem being the main or sometimes only pollinators of the native plant life in particular.
