What are Niches?

When we come to Hive, we always come with a goal: to grow as content creators, but for that, we have to have an idea of the content we want to make. That's where niches come into play; we have to find a place where we can share our passion or talent to make ourselves known in the blockchain, and niches have that particular function: uniting all the creators who share tastes on a specific topic.

In this video, you will learn how to find a particular niche using keywords and some tips for people who are currently creating a community or people who already have time for their active communities.

To know if a community is worth posting, check its numbers, number of subscribers, active users, pending rewards, and main language because you will know if it is a niche that creators and curators are visiting. You can also know if you need to make your posts in two languages.

Today, we will learn a little about a topic you may not know in detail, such as the Hive Witnesses.

For this, @dimeilaz and @eddiespino made a video detailing some important aspects of witnesses, such as their main functions, how much they earn, governance, and what it takes to be a witness.

In addition, they also explain how to be part of Hive Governance without running a node but voting for one as such, using our votes available at the top of witnesses.

What are Hive Witnesses, and What Do They Do?

A Witness in Hive is a person or project that runs the blockchain's source code through a machine known as a "Node." This preserves the decentralization of security because the only way Hive would "disappear" would be if all nodes were shut down simultaneously. The more Hive tokens there are, the more secure the blockchain will be maintained over time.

The main objective of a Witness Node is to decentralize the security of the blockchain and produce the blocks where all the information about all the transactions that take place daily on the blockchain is stored.

However, a witness node can have another type of impact within Hive that makes it worth the community's votes because witnesses are chosen based on a Hive Power stake in their proposals, and these proposals must be attractive and logical for the community to vote for.

20 main witnesses are part of Hive Governance and can change the blockchain through what we know as "Hardfork" based on majority decisions.

What does a Witness get in return for its work?

When producing and validating a block of information within the blockchain, each token gets an incentive in Hive Power. This comes to 0.3 HP every 3 seconds for governance nodes (the top 20) and around 1.512 HP for backup nodes, with a different timeout range depending on the position within the top of tokens.

Backup witnesses are those ranked below the top 20. They produce one block in each round of 21 blocks, with the top 20 witnesses producing the first 20 blocks and a backup witness producing the 21st bless.

Becoming a Witness

Anyone can become a witness on the Hive blockchain. To be elected, individuals must set up a witness node and gain votes from the community. As a witness's rank increases, they produce more blocks and earn more Hive Power. The election process involves campaigning for votes and demonstrating reliability and commitment to the network.

There are several ways to vote for a witness. It's important to know that to vote for a witness, you need to use your active key. If you want to vote for a witness from a mobile device, the best way to do it is through Hive Keychain. Check our tutorial to learn how to use it.

Our Experience as Witnesses on Hives

In the case of Aliento, we have achieved many objectives as hive witnesses, among which we can highlight the following:

• The growth and empowerment of the Hispanic community: Through the support of many allied communities and the resources obtained through blockchain incentives, we have supported many content creators, which in turn has generated growth that has generated a virtuous circle.

• Important development work: We have the vision to achieve important things at the development level. At the moment, we have interesting tools such as the bot that automatically pays our delegators through Disco, and we have in mind the development of many other things that can generate positive impacts on important topics such as user acquisition, education, etc.

• Humanitarian work: Recently, we launched the @aliento.aid project, a non-profit project focused on supporting people with complicated health situations that require humanitarian support, in which we invite our community to participate.

Right now, we have many challenges ahead of us. Our main mid-term goal is to reach the Top 30 of the Top Witnesses and then reach the governance of the blockchain by entering the Top 20.

Delegate Through Ecency

To perform the delegation of Hive Power through Ecency, we will perform the following steps:

Open Ecency on your Smartphone

First, we will open the app on our smartphone and press the "wallet" button in the menu below.

Then, we will press the "Hive Power" button to access our particular stake menu.

Enter the account you want to delegate to

In the delegation interface, you will see a box in which you must enter the name of the account of the person you want to delegate to; you will see a drop-down list in case you do not know the user name precisely, with several names that match what you are typing.

Confirm delegation

After selecting the account we want to delegate, press the "next" button to display a new interface asking us for the amount of Hive Power we want to delegate. After entering it, we will click the "review" button to display a sale with a last look at what we want to do.

If there are no problems, press the "confirm" button, and that's it.

Delegate Through Hive Keychain

The steps to perform the delegation through the Hive Keychain are quite similar to those of Ecency. Let's see:

Open Hive Keychain on your Smartphone

After opening our app on our smartphone, we will press where it says "HP", a new menu will be displayed and we will press where it says "HP Delegation".

Enter the account you want to delegate to and confirm

In this case, it is simplified a little more. You just enter the account you want to delegate and click the "Send" button. You must be careful because, in this case, there is no Evency drop-down list, so if you have a typing error, you may have an error when sending the delegation, or you can send a delegation to the wrong account if it exists.

Peak Vault is an alternative to Hive Keychain. It is under development, this is actually a beta version, but it has similar characteristics. At the moment, you can log in with the Peak Vault wallet at https://beta.hivehub.dev/.

Today we'll learn how to install the Hive Keychain browser extension and configure our Hive Keychain account through a short video made by @dimeilaz.

How to install Hive Keychain on a Smartphone

To install the Hive Keychain, we have to follow some concrete steps that are not very complicated, so let's get started!

Step 1.- Go to Play Store or App Store and type "Hive Keychain"

Step 2.- Open the app in your smartphone

After installing the app, you will see a home screen on the smartphone that will tell you the following:

The idea when installing the application is that you already have a Hive account created to associate it with, so let's press the “Existing Account” button.

Step 3.- Configure your Hive Keychain

When you start using the keychain, you will be asked for a numeric password, similar to a PIN to unlock the keychain each time you want to use it.

The app will ask you to enter the password twice to verify it.

Step 4.- Add your account to Hive Keychain

After setting our password, the Hive Keychain will prompt us for a username and password, we will use our master password to bring all the keys associated with our account.

When we create our Hive account, we receive a document like the one in the image above, so, let's copy the key that says “password”.

Then, we will use our username for the top field and the master password in the bottom field, then we will press the “Import” button.

After this step, the Hive Keychain will ask us if we want to see a short tutorial on how to use it, we can choose to skip it or we can watch the whole tutorial and it will take us to a special window.

And once we have finished everything correctly we will see something like this:

In this interface we can see everything associated with our account, our user, our liquid crypto (HIVE, HBD), our stake (Hive Power - HP), among others.

We hope this tutorial has been very useful and soon we will bring a new part to explain how to use the keychain for other particular things.
